Molslinjen ran its ferries on a forecasting and revenue-management toolbox, not habit.

A ferry operator measures capacity in lane metres, not seats, so it built forecasting plus pack and pricing engines that cut fuel, delays and cost.

Molslinjen runs fast catamaran ferries across Danish waters and is one of the world's largest such operators. It moved to digitalisation and partnered with Halfspace, a Copenhagen data and AI firm, to change how it forecasts demand and prices departures.

The core insight is that ferry capacity is measured in lane metres, not in integer seats, so no-shows and overbooking behave differently from an airline. The team engineered a forecasting engine, an optimal packing algorithm for the cargo deck, and a dynamic-pricing engine that reads context and regulatory constraints.

Deployed operationally from 2020, the toolbox delivered $2.6 to $3.2 million in yearly savings, about $5 million in total by December 2023, fewer and shorter delays, and a 3% cut in fuel costs and emissions.

后来呢

The work won the 2024 Edelman Award and was written up as the Interfaces paper Data-Driven at Sea. Halfspace said the toolbox generalises to the wider ferry industry, and the team highlighted the revenue and environmental gains as the method spreads beyond Denmark.
