Ferry operator Molslinjen cut fuel and raised revenue with departure-level AI pricing
Molslinjen and Halfspace forecast vehicles per departure to pack ferries and price dynamically; up to $3.2M yearly savings and 3% less fuel since 2020.

那一手
Molslinjen, one of the world's largest operators of fast catamaran ferries, runs routes across Denmark that carry vehicles and passengers on tight schedules. Without knowing how many vehicles would show up for a departure, crews loaded by guesswork: ferries left late, deck space went unused, and each sailing burned more fuel than needed.
With Copenhagen-based Halfspace, Molslinjen built a bespoke forecasting and revenue management toolbox. Machine learning predicts vehicle arrivals per departure; a loading module packs vehicles to use lane meters better, and a dynamic pricing engine sets fares from demand and regulatory constraints. The toolbox went live in 2020.
INFORMS awarded Molslinjen the 2024 Franz Edelman Award, citing up to $3.2 million in yearly savings and a 3% cut in fuel costs and emissions. The peer-reviewed DTU case study reports $2.6–3.2 million annual savings and $5 million in total savings by December 2023, plus fewer delayed departures.
为什么管用
- Demand is forecast at the unit that matters — each departure — so loading and pricing act on the same prediction.
- Better packing raises vehicle capacity per sailing, so revenue grows without adding departures.
- Fewer delays and lower fuel burn improve both the customer experience and emissions, strengthening the business case.
可以搬走什么
Forecast at the level where you actually decide — a departure, not a month — and let the same prediction drive both pricing and physical operations; one model then pays twice.
后来呢
The system has run operationally since 2020, with savings reaching $5 million by December 2023 and a 3% reduction in fuel costs and emissions. Molslinjen's CEO calls the partnership a transformation of operations and mindset, and Halfspace is marketing the toolbox to the global ferry industry, which INFORMS notes could multiply the ESG and revenue impact.
