Mercedes-AMG sold out a US$1M roadster by listing 250 reasons not to buy it

With a roof-less, windshield-less car priced at $1M and limited to 250 units, AMG ran 250 absurd 'reasons not to buy' — and every unit sold.

那一手

The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed — no roof, no windshield, two helmets included, a seven-figure price and only 250 units — had no practical selling point. Launching it with conventional 'reasons to buy' would have been absurd.

Agency antoni team flipped the brief: '250 Reasons Not to Buy the PureSpeed'. The campaign produced 250 assets across social, product drops, digital out-of-home, guerrilla stunts, a pop-up, a downloadable GTA Online mod and even a 'Personal Meteorologist' job opening.

The reverse psychology turned an impractical toy into a cultural object: all 250 units sold out, and the ultra-exclusive car became desirable to millions who could never afford it.

The work earned a place in D&AD's award archive, standing out in a category where launches usually compete on specs and aspiration.

为什么管用

  • Admitting the car is unreasonable disarms skepticism and makes the brand feel self-aware.
  • Scarcity plus humour spreads farther than spec-sheet advertising.
  • Treating non-buyers as the audience built desire among the few who could buy.

可以搬走什么

When a product's whole story is irrational desire, lean in: celebrate how unreasonable the purchase is instead of defending it — scarcity plus humour out-sells persuasion.

后来呢

Mercedes-AMG kept the stunt assets alive as collector content after the sell-out, and the campaign became a reference point for luxury launches that sell on irrationality rather than utility.
