Maersk's StarRipe ripens bananas inside the shipping container
Maersk's controlled-atmosphere container holds a banana at a chosen colour and ripens it on command, cutting ripening cost up to 30%.

那一手
Bananas are climacteric: once picked they keep ripening, so shippers were trapped by a clock. Fruit arrived too ripe, or port ripening rooms added handling and cost.
Maersk's StarCare controlled-atmosphere container holds temperature and humidity while lowering oxygen and raising carbon dioxide, which slows respiration and the fruit's response to ethylene.
StarRipe builds on that to give controlled ripening on command, so a shipper loads green fruit, tracks it in real time and reaches the exact colour stage when it reaches the customer.
Maersk says moving ripening into the container cuts ripening-related cost by up to 30% and removes some of the need to build, power and stock a stationary ripening room.
为什么管用
- Lower O2 and higher CO2 put the banana's ripening on hold until it is wanted.
- Real-time remote monitoring lets ripening be triggered at the moment, not by guesswork.
- Saving the port ripening room cuts capital, energy and trucking.
- A controlled trip lets small shipments reach distant markets that were previously out of range.
可以搬走什么
Save a perishable by controlling its internal chemistry, then let its clock resume only at the destination.
后来呢
Maersk folded StarRipe into its Captain Peter visibility platform and used it to push into remote markets, positioning the carrier as a ripening partner rather than a pure mover; the technique quietly became a standard feature of modern reefers.
