Hyundai's lashing-free boxship runs the cargo-hold cell guide up onto the open deck
Extending the cell guide above the deck lets containers lock themselves upright, removing lashing bridges and hatch covers.

Lashing a container to a ship's deck is slow, manual and exposed: crews tie each box down with rods and turnbuckles. Hyundai Heavy Industries removed the lashing bridge and hatch cover and instead extended the cell guide, which normally only exists in the hold, up onto the open deck.
A portable bench takes the deck containers' weight and transfers it into the hull, and the extended cell guide fixes each box in place, so the stack aligns itself. The design was approved by both ABS and the Liberian Registry.
It is an idea with history: in the mid-1990s Nedlloyd, Matson and Norasia briefly ran hatchless ships, but water ingress and longer crane cycles (every box had to be lifted over higher sides) pushed them back to conventional ships. Hyundai's version bets the new bench and guides solve what killed the last attempt.

- Cell guides are already proven in the hold, so extending them is lower-risk than inventing a new fastening.
- Removing lashing bridges cuts equipment, crew time and deck clutter.
- A portable bench lets operators add the frame only where a ship actually runs deck boxes.
- The 1990s failure showed the design only works if upper-deck loading doesn't slow the crane.
