Brink's armored trucks made cash a cargo that could move safely
After a 1917 payroll robbery, Brink's armored its fleet with school-bus chassis — inventing the armored car and the secure-cash logistics industry.

Washington Perry Brink started in 1859 with a horse-drawn wagon carrying parcels in Chicago, and the business found its niche moving cash for merchants. Cash was also the danger: payroll shipments drew robbers, and after a particularly violent payroll robbery in 1917, Brink's decided the wagons themselves had to change.
The company rebuilt surplus school buses with armored side panels and, by 1923, acquired its first fully armored car — a rolling strongroom with guards. In 1925 it added the famous two-key safe, so no single employee could open it alone. Cash could now be shipped like any freight, on a schedule, without relying on secrecy or luck.
The armored car turned secure transport into a repeatable service, and Brink's expanded city by city. During the Depression, the mere sight of a Brink's truck at an ailing bank could calm depositors and stave off a bank run — the truck itself had become a symbol of safety.

Brink's grew into the largest secure-logistics company in the US, with over 2,300 armored vehicles today, and expanded into cash processing, ATMs and currency logistics worldwide. The armored car became a standard of modern commerce, and Brink's is one of only 57 US firms founded in 1859 still in business.
