C.H. Robinson made the trailer a shared buffer so the tractor never waits

Drop-and-hook lets drivers swap a loaded trailer and leave, while telematics and AI route where empties should sit.

C.H. Robinson Worldwide

那一手

In traditional live loading a truck waits at the dock while a crew fills the trailer, tying up the driver and the tractor for hours.

Drop and hook turns the trailer into a decoupled buffer: the driver drops a loaded trailer and hooks a waiting one, so the truck keeps moving. Drop-trailer programs now represent nearly half of the truckload market.

C.H. Robinson applied AI and telematics to its trailer pools to optimize routing, availability and asset use, turning a passive fleet of parked trailers into a managed network.

为什么管用

  • The driver and tractor are the expensive, scarce part, so they shouldn't sit while the dock works.
  • A trailer can be pre-loaded, so the loading and the trip overlap instead of serializing.
  • Telematics reveal empty trailers' locations so they can be repositioned to the next load.
  • It raises utilization across a shared pool rather than requiring more tractors.

可以搬走什么

When one partner in a workflow is expensive and another is cheap, decouple them — let the expensive one keep working and the cheap one absorb the wait.

后来呢

By 2025 drop-and-hook made up close to half of the US truckload market, and C.H. Robinson's AI-assisted Drop Trailer Plus program paired telematics with routing to improve trailer availability and uptime.
