Alnage sealed cloth bolts to certify quality and tax
England's alnager sealed each cloth bolt once, certifying quality and tax, so buyers trusted the seal without unrolling.
The Alnage (Office of the King's Alnager), England
那一手
English woollen cloth was sold folded and rolled into bolts, and its value depended on facts a buyer could not see without undoing that fold: whether the cloth was the correct standardized width and length, and whether its weave held the same quality in the middle as at the edges, where weavers were most tempted to cut corners. Unrolling a bolt to check answered the question for that one prospective buyer, but ruined the fold and left every subsequent buyer down the chain facing the identical problem all over again -- verification could not simply be repeated at every resale without destroying
The Crown, meanwhile, wanted a reliable way to tax England's largest category of traded goods, but taxing cloth after the fact meant chasing payment separately from the sale itself, with no natural checkpoint at which the tax was self-evidently due and the goods self-evidently legitimate at the same moment.
为什么管用
- Unrolling a bolt to check ruined the fold, so repeated checks were impossible.
- A lead seal attached to the cloth itself traveled with the bolt through resales.
- The seal encoded length, quality, and tax payment, readable at a glance.
- Buyers trusted the seal because the alnager was a royal official with authority.
可以搬走什么
When verification destroys the product, certify once at the source and let the mark travel with the good.
后来呢
The 1551-2 Great Statute of Clothing brought roughly 30 textile types under the seal; the alnage ran for centuries before ending in 1724. The alnage is now cited by economic and numismatic historians as an early ancestor of the modern quality-and-tax stamp -- the same logic behind hallmarks on precious metals, government excise stamps, and tamper-evident seals on packaged goods: fold verification and revenue collection into a single mark made once, at a trusted checkpoint, that every downstream party can read without repeating the check.
