Spotify turned the media-plan spreadsheet its buyers already open into the ad itself
问题
Planners budget billions in spreadsheets, yet pitches reach them via media they swipe past, with the deciding eye absent
背景
Spotify's ad audience is B2B: the media planners and buyers who place brands' budgets across channels. These are the people whose daily work lives almost entirely inside the media-plan spreadsheets agencies and platforms exchange — tables of placements, budgets and reach. Yet to convince them Spotify was more than a digital-audio player, Spotify advertised through ordinary paid media: films placed where a busy planner scrolling for their next deliverable could easily miss them, competing for seconds of attention against every other pitch in the same feed.
The conventional campaign takes a hard-won creative idea and buys its way in front of the decision-maker through third-party real estate. The planner's genuine workspace — the spreadsheet they are paid to live in — was treated as a preview of the pitch the way a deck is, never as the medium itself.
换别人会怎么做
The obvious move for a brand pitching media planners is to run a bought campaign — a film or banner purchased into the feeds and channels the planner scrolls — matching what every other vendor does, paying for seconds of competing attention at a cost that scales with how many people might glance at it. That treats the spreadsheet where the actual decision happens as a backdrop for the pitch rather than as the pitch's own surface.

The buyer's real attention lives inside the media-plan spreadsheet. Spotify made the spreadsheet itself the ad — the required artifact proved video capability in video form.
那一手
Spotify and FCB New York built a four-minute music video coded entirely inside the same Excel media-plan spreadsheets Spotify already sends to advertising clients, using only the native tools planners use every day — ASCII, Unicode, charts, conditional formatting — so rows and columns come alive as an animated character and soundtrack. It told the story of a single cell, E7, born into a world of numbers, who journeys toward realizing audio and visual media can combine. Sales teams were also given a 'Spreadbeats Generator' to drop in any client's name, brand and RFP brief and regenerate a customized spreadsheet that is simultaneously the media plan and the ad.
为什么管用
The file reaches the buyer at the exact moment and location they are already working — a spreadsheet they must open — so it converts the audience that matters with zero media spend and no swipe-away option, delivering proof-by-doing: revealing the craft of building video inside the very workbook the planner lives in demonstrates the substantive claim (Spotify handles more than audio) more credibly than any bought assertion. Because the tool is the industry's own and the delivery channel is the document they already expect, the ad arrives where all pitches compete for absence of attention, occupies the seat the buyer cannot avoid, and signals a depth of engineering that makes the message believable precisely because it is demonstrated rather than stated.

什么时候会失灵
It fails where the buyer's routine document carries no real weight in the decision — a C-suite that never personally opens the spreadsheet will never see the ad, and the mechanism decays into a novelty film watched once. It also depends on the task being dramatic inside the document's native grammar; if the brand's story cannot be rendered as a spectacle through charts, cells and formatting, the file stays a decorated spreadsheet rather than a message. And the surprise is one-shot: once competitors copy the move, the recipient's prior teaches them to expect an ad inside the document, and the same attention advantage evaporates.
后来呢
The mechanism — making the routine operational document a supplier already hands the counterparty into the deliverable — earned FCB New York Agency of the Year and D&AD's Network of the Year in 2025, and was cited by the award jury as an example of a brand 'working its way into an existing platform' rather than renting one.
