Plenitude runs its billboards in dark mode so the medium proves the energy-saving claim

问题

An energy company wants to run its sustainability ads on energy-hungry screens without ignoring its own message

背景

Plenitude, the renewables arm of Italian energy group Eni, wanted to talk about energy saving at city scale. Its first instinct, and the industry default, was a 'bright and beautiful' campaign: glossy full-colour films and brilliantly lit digital screens, because in outdoor advertising brightness equals impact and visibility equals reach. But that instinct collides with the message — burnishing a saving-energy story on thousands of power-draining LED panels undercuts the claim every escalator of the day the screens stay on.

Fighting this meant rejecting the reflex that an ad must be as bright and loud as the medium allows. Plenitude needed a way to make the outdoor advertising channel itself demonstrate the thing it was selling, so the proof would be visible in the ad's own behaviour rather than asserted by it.

换别人会怎么做

Every conventional response pushes brightness, not away from it: shoot a cinematic film about energy saving, buy premium screens and run it as loudly as possible, and justify the electricity on reach. That is exactly backward for a message about conservation, because the ad's own power draw quietly rebuts the claim for the entire campaign. Dialling the creative DOWN, for a brand whose instinct is to climb every brightness knob, is the opposite of what any competent art director would suggest.

他们看到了什么

Plenitude saw the screen is not a neutral carrier but part of the message's own evidence: an energy claim on a power-hungry screen contradicts itself, while the same claim in power-saving mode becomes self-evident

那一手

LePub borrowed the dark-mode trick of consumer devices and applied it to Plenitude's own digital out-of-home screens: the ads show the campaign on dark backgrounds with dimmed creative, literally throttling how much power each screen draws while it runs. The medium (the electric billboard) is operated in energy-saving mode, so the ad acts out its own message every time it displays rather than merely claiming it.

为什么管用

Every exposure dual-codes: the creative asserts saving, and the screen's own lower draw demonstrates it, so the audience receives a claim and its proof in the same moment, and the proof is unarguable because it is happening on the surface they are looking at. Because the saving happens every moment the campaign runs, the message is reinforced continuously rather than only when someone reads the copy, and a sustainability company dimming its own screens is a behaviour with no advertising double-bluffing that can be accused of. The distinctiveness also comes from borrowing the 'dark mode saves battery' mechanic from consumer devices, a domain outside advertising, and transplanting it onto billboard infrastructure, so it reads as a fresh move rather than recycled green messaging.

值了多少

It won a Cannes Media Lion Gold for Market Disruption plus two Bronzes; the energy-savings figures are unverified case-study self-report

什么时候会失灵

It fails where the medium cannot be made to embody the claim or where dimmer screens actively hurt the proposition — luxury and fashion brands selling brightness, spectacle or maximalism would erode their own equity by running dim creative, and in a network of rented third-party screens the operator holds the brightness and power controls, so the advertiser may not control the medium's actual consumption. The campaign's credibility rests on the audience believing the darkening is a genuine saving, not staged; if the screens are on a grid fed by fossil power and the honest saving is trivial, the move reads as tokenism and can backfire.

后来呢

Whether dark mode becomes a recurring OOH idiom for sustainability advertisers is an open question, but the campaign seeded a template: an advertiser can make the channel it already pays for demonstrate an environmental claim through its own operation, which is harder to dismiss than a claim printed on the same screen.
