XP sells investing by teaching it first: education is the acquisition engine
Door-to-door stock sales failed; XP's free finance lectures converted 100%. The Porto Alegre broker built education-first growth into a giant.
XP Investimentos
The solution
XP Investimentos was born in Porto Alegre to sell stocks. Its first months were door-to-door visits — 500 calls that mostly failed, because clients did not understand equities enough to say yes.
The founders switched to free lectures explaining how to choose investments, and saw near-100% conversion. They rented a small hotel room for weekend courses and concluded the business model was financial education first, financial services second.
That insight scaled: by 2013 XP had 800 employees, 1,500 autonomous agents and 80,000 individual clients; the education arm (XP Educação) became core, and in September 2025 XP announced Brazil's first graduation in Investments and Financial Markets, starting February 2026 with founder Guilherme Benchimol among the teachers.
Why it worked
- Free education removes the trust barrier that cold calls cannot.
- Students convert into clients at nearly 100%.
- Teaching doubles as brand and category building.
- A trained investor base grows the whole market, not just XP.
What can be applied
When the product is unfamiliar, sell understanding first: education is not a cost center but the acquisition funnel — it creates the very demand your product then captures.
Aftermath
XP grew into Brazil's largest independent brokerage and a public company; XP Educação now runs courses, partnerships and a pioneering graduation program, and the Instituto XP aims to bring financial education to 50 million people in ten years. The education-first funnel remains the brand's origin story and growth logic.
