The solution
Woolworths New Zealand wanted people to appreciate where food comes from and the role pollinators play in that chain. The answer was not another sustainability lecture but a retail metaphor that children and parents could immediately read.
The Bee Supermarket offered bees the resources they need and reworked supermarket touchpoints into an interactive education experience. The store format made the dependency concrete: without pollinators, there is no normal grocery aisle.
AXIS describes the work as the world's first supermarket for bees, and Ideazite lists it as a Bronze winner at Spikes Asia 2025 in Guerrilla Marketing & Stunts.
What it achieved
Make bees the supermarket customers
Why it worked
It used the client's own retail language, so the idea felt native to Woolworths rather than borrowed.
The metaphor reversed the usual relationship: humans became observers while bees became the customers.
The installation taught both industry and household actions without turning the message into a scold.
What can be applied
To explain an invisible supply-chain dependency, invert the store: let the overlooked contributor become the shopper.
Aftermath
The campaign won AXIS recognition and a Bronze at Spikes Asia 2025. It also gave Woolworths a compact way to connect gardens, farm inputs and supermarket shelves in one visible experience.
