Weyerhaeuser's timber value depends on how each felled stem is crosscut into logs and what each resulting log is allocated to, yet buckers historically followed fixed grade-based rules that left money in the woods.

The company built VISION, a decision simulator using dynamic programming, that shows the economic value of a crosscutting and log-allocation plan and lets the bucker or manager alter the decisions and immediately see the change in return.

Because sawyers ran the simulator themselves and watched the payoff of better cuts, the optimized approach took root in practice; the company reported operational benefits exceeding $100 million in increased profits, and the tool changed how timber-processing decisions were made.
