WeCapital turned shopkeepers' notebooks into a real credit history for Mexico's unbanked

A lender formalized the informal 'fiado' credit records kept in corner-store notebooks, letting bankless women prove they can pay and get microloans.

WeCapital

the move

WeCapital was told to make a campaign to support women, but DDB Mexico saw a worse problem underneath: 83% of Mexican women had no credit record, so even reliable borrowers were invisible to banks. The agency reframed the ask from a brand-comms job to a product that manufactures the missing asset.

Women in Latin America buy food and supplies on trust at their corner store, and stores keep handwritten ledgers of who owes what and who pays. That behavior — 'fiado' — is effectively a credit history, except it lives in a notebook the formal financial system cannot read.

Data Tienda collected the storekeepers' records via a simple two-minute online form, converting them into an official credit profile. Women authorized the data collection, and the resulting file was usable at WeCapital and other lenders, not just the sponsor.

By December 2021 more than 100 women had received their first microcredits and the scheme had spread from Mexico City to Puebla, Guadalajara, Morelia and Monterrey. The whole program mobilized a vast informal financial record that banks had overlooked for decades.

why it works

  • It solved the real constraint (proof of repayment) rather than the stated one (no credit).
  • It used an existing trusted behavior — corner-store ledgers — instead of inventing a new ritual.
  • The product was agnostic: a woman could take it to any lender, so it wasn't a self-serving tie-in.
  • The storekeepers' contribution took minutes, so the burden of compliance was low enough to scale.
the payoffThe problem wasn't no credit — it was no credit historyinspired

what transfers

Before inventing a new campaign, re-frame the problem. The obstacle wasn't access to credit but proof of creditworthiness, which already existed in an analog form the financial system ignored.

what came after

More than 10,300 women registered, over 2,300 received microloans, and data was captured from 50,000+ business owners. It won the Creative Data Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2022. WeCapital later expanded the idea into a community-commerce platform ('The E-commerce of Trust') to widen the lending base, and marketed the model to other countries in Latin America.
