Volkswagen Brazil reunited Elis Regina with her daughter by AI — and won the Grand Effie

For its 70 years in Brazil, VW trained facial-recognition AI to bring back the late Elis Regina for a first duet with her daughter — the new always comes.

Volkswagen do Brasil

The solution

In 2023 Volkswagen do Brasil turned 70 — but anniversaries are common, and a brand whose laurels are Brazilian classics like the Kombi, Gol and Fusca risked being remembered only as a museum piece. The campaign's answer was a piece of cultural resurrection: bring back Elis Regina, the greatest Brazilian singer of her era, who died 41 years earlier when her daughter Maria Rita was four.

AlmapBBDO's film 'Gerações' had Maria Rita drive the all-electric ID.Buzz down a road where Elis approached in the classic Kombi; together they sang 'Como nossos pais'. The mourning-daughter reunion existed only in the imagination until a purpose-built facial-recognition AI — trained over days on Elis's face and movements, applied over a body double, with her original voice — made the duet real for two minutes.

The technology was the message: VW framed the film as proof that innovation honors the past instead of erasing it, syncing the mother-daughter reunion with a generational handoff from the Kombi to its 100% electric successor, arriving in a limited run of 70 units.

The campaign ran on broadcast, out-of-home, digital and a live activation at the The Town festival, where Maria Rita performed. It won the Grand Effie at Effie Awards Brasil 2024 and AlmapBBDO was named Agency of the Year for the third year running.

Why it worked

  • Elis Regina is the emotional shortcut to three generations of Brazilians — no casting, no explanation, instant recognition and instant tears.
  • Custom-trained AI (not off-the-shelf deepfakes) made the resurrection faithful enough to feel like a gift — and a daughter singing with her mother carried its own ethical weight.
  • The car pairing did the product work silently: Kombi = past, ID.Buzz = future, one road = the brand's continuity.
  • A real cultural event (The Town festival) gave the film a second life as live performance, stretching the campaign beyond paid media.

What can be applied

When your brand IS a piece of national memory, you don't need a celebrity endorsement — you need the right deceased icon back, once, perfectly; the unexpected resurrection is the whole campaign.

Aftermath

The film became one of the most-shared Brazilian ads of the year and the default reference example worldwide for 'AI resurrection' advertising — both celebrated and debated. Volkswagen Brazil rode the momentum into its electrification narrative, and AlmapBBDO's third consecutive Agency of the Year cemented the case as proof that emotional technology beats feature-list marketing in mature markets.
