Vodacom's Anti Hi-Jack Ads treated a media placement as a safety intervention. Instead of a general awareness message about dangerous roads, the campaign used location and incident data to reach drivers while they still had time to choose differently.

D&AD says the team used crime data and third-party car-tracking data to identify dangerous roads and intersections, then activated simple targeted ads from multiple approaching roads. Real-time data let the team add new adverts as hotspots were reported.

The smartness was in the timing. A warning after a driver reaches a danger zone is too late; a broad public-service film is too diffuse. The campaign put the message just upstream of the decision point.

The work was shortlisted by D&AD in Media, and Bizcommunity's D&AD winners roundup lists Vodacom Anti Hi-Jack Ads as a South African Media Shortlist entry.

Warn people before the danger point

It used existing ad targeting infrastructure for a practical warning system.

The audience was defined by approach path, not demographics.

Live hotspot updates kept the media plan tied to current risk.

The message mattered because it arrived before the driver's route decision.

Media can do more than target attention; with the right data and timing, it can become operational guidance.

Anti Hi-Jack Ads appeared in D&AD's 2023 archive and in regional awards coverage as a Media shortlist entry. Bizcommunity also listed it among 2023 Bookmark Awards finalists in Mobile Campaign, Best Use of Data and Excellence in Craft: Digital Media.
