Velcro copied burdock burrs into a hook-and-loop fastener that beat zippers.
George de Mestral turned burrs that stuck to his dog into a reusable nylon fastener: one side hooks, the other loops, and it opens and locks thousands of times.

the move
In 1941 zippers snagged, buttons came undone and laces broke, so every fastener failed after wear, and the usual ideas were a stronger zip or a tighter snap that kept the same failure mode.
On a hunt burrs clung to de Mestral's dog; under his microscope he saw the burr was covered in tiny hooks that gripped the loops of fur and fabric.
He set out to reproduce that geometry in nylon, working with a weaver in France until the hooks and loops engaged, and he patented the locking tape in 1955 under the name Velcro, from velours and crochet.
The design works because the hooks bend elastically: they grip on a pull but slide out on a peel, so strength and reusability come from the same shape.

Velcro became so ubiquitous it had to defend its trademark against generic use, and hook-and-loop fastening spread into shoes, aerospace, astronaut suits and medical devices. The early patent expired and the fastener became a byword for any product that grips and re-engages, with de Mestral selling his rights and the brand passing into general use.
