Vale made the world's largest ore carriers to cut freight cost from Brazil to China

Vale built 400,000-tonne Valemax bulkers, over twice a capesize's capacity, so the same Brazil–China haul carried far more ore and drove cost per tonne down.

the move

Vale is the world's largest iron-ore producer, mining in Brazil while its biggest buyers sit in China, thousands of kilometres away. Ocean freight is the most controllable cost on that lane, so cutting cost per tonne reshapes a commodity producer's competitiveness.

Vale's bet was on size: it ordered ultra-large ore carriers of roughly 400,000 deadweight tonnes (the Valemax class), about 2.3 times the capacity of its capesize ships. The reasoning was that freight cost per tonne falls as vessel size rises, because crew, fuel and capital do not rise in proportion to cargo.

Scale was not free: Valemax vessels exceeded what most ports could accept, so Vale also had to build or secure deepwater terminals and negotiate port access in China. The economies only appear if the entire chain accepts the giant carrier; the first ships were delivered around 2011.

The result was a step-change in the cost of moving iron ore. The lesson: when demand is concentrated and predictable, scale the vehicle rather than raise the price, but treat the port as part of the invention.

Valemax ships drew port-access disputes and scrutiny in China, but also set the benchmark for bulk-carrier design; competitors and large container lines followed the bigger-ship logic, driving a race to scale in ocean shipping.
