Unilever lets shoppers refill products into any plastic bottle

Unilever removed the branding from its packaging, letting shoppers fill Vim, Surf Excel and Comfort into any container, driving 85% repeat purchases.

the move

Unilever's home-care products are in the majority of Indian households, so the company's business and its plastic footprint grow together. But simply telling shoppers to refill for the environment fails, because most people do not care enough about sustainability to change a habit. The barrier was behavioural and commercial, not informational.

Smart Fill removed the barrier by removing Unilever's own brand asset. In-store, a shopper fills any of the company's product lines into any empty plastic container - a Vim bottle, or another brand's bottle - through a machine, in exchange for a discount. The brand traded its packaging, the thing it normally guards, to shift customers from pre-packed to refill, and to a more sustainable option that also costs less.

The machine lined its containers with a biodegradable material containing a small amount of active probiotic Bacillus thuringiensis, so that when the packaging is eventually discarded it kills mosquito larvae rather than just adding to waste. The whole design treated the customer's convenience as the lever and the sustainability as the by-product, rather than the other way around.

why it works

  • Shoppers respond to price and convenience, not environmental appeals alone.
  • Letting them use any brand's container removed the 'buy our new refill bottle' friction.
  • Sacrificing packaging neutralised the 'Unilever is in the plastic business' critique.
  • The probiotic lining made even the residual waste less harmful.

what transfers

If your brand asset is the barrier, make it a loss to yourself - but only if the trade is priced and positioned as a win for the customer.

what came after

Smart Fill reached more than 100,000 households, with an 85% increase in repeat purchases and about 57.2kg of plastic reduced per day, while generating roughly US$1.5 million in earned media. The work reached hundreds of millions of consumers and won recognition including a Cannes Lions Gold in Creative Commerce. Unilever scaled the concept as part of its shift to refillable, reusable packaging models in emerging markets.
