Temu took over pricing and logistics so Chinese factories export with one click

the move
Temu launched in the US on 1 September 2022, weeks after PDD started the project in May 2022, with an operating model built for China's small manufacturers: 'fully managed'. Merchants only list goods and deliver them to PDD's domestic warehouse within 24 hours; the platform handles pricing, sales, logistics, returns and after-sales.
Because the platform acts like a giant buyer rather than a marketplace, it dynamically selects the lowest-cost supplier for each listing and sets the selling price. Merchants keep margins thin and volume high; the barrier that used to stop a local factory from exporting — customs, marketing, foreign logistics — disappears.
The model paid off fast: Temu covered 82 countries by 2024, with overseas sales of about $20 billion in the first half of 2024, and its user base reached 91% of Amazon's by August 2024. Rival Chinese platforms adopted fully managed operations as an industry standard.

what came after
Temu's fully-managed model became the reference for Chinese cross-border ecommerce, copied by rivals within two years. The platform later added semi-managed modes for sellers with overseas stock, but the original design — the platform as merchant — is what opened the export channel to China's smallest factories.
