Stellapps turned milk collection into a data rail for farmers

India's dairy chain is vast but fragmented, with many smallholder farmers selling through local collection points. IIT Madras Research Park describes Stellapps, incorporated in 2011, as an IITM-incubated startup digitizing the dairy supply chain end-to-end with IoT, machine learning and data analytics.

The clever move was to make milk collection itself the data layer. Stellapps says its SmartMoo platform gathers data from milking systems, animal wearables, chilling equipment and procurement peripherals, then sends analytics to stakeholders over low-end and smart mobile devices. Its smartCC product syncs milk analyzer, weighing-scale, chilling and payment data at collection and chilling centers.

The product page reports 865 smartCC installations, 59,000 registered collection-center agents, 600 million liters of annualized milk flow and $215 million in annual agent payments enabled. Mathematica separately described a Gates Foundation evaluation of Stellapps' technology, extension and financial services for smallholder farmers in Uttar Pradesh.

Instrument the collection point

Milk quality, volume and timing are objective signals that already determine farmer income.

Sensors at collection points work even when farmers do not own smartphones.

Real-time quality data reduces disputes between farmers, agents and dairies.

Payment and production histories become inputs for credit, insurance and advisory services.

To digitize a fragmented supply chain, do not start with a farmer app; instrument the trusted transaction point where value is already measured.

Stellapps expanded from procurement into cold-chain monitoring, cattle wearables, farm advisory, payment and fintech services. Mathematica's 2020-2023 project was designed to test whether the model improved smallholder productivity and livelihoods, especially for women farmers.
