Smirnoff unified its whole portfolio under one 'Vodka for the People' platform

Instead of launching a product ad, Smirnoff made inclusivity the brand's single umbrella — then extended it into an NFL partnership and a charity fund.

Smirnoff (Diageo)

The solution

Smirnoff, the world's No. 1 vodka, launched 'Vodka for the People' in August 2021 as a unifying rallying cry. The platform highlighted inclusivity and moments that bring people together, and it deliberately spanned the entire Smirnoff trademark rather than one SKU.

The launch used star-studded films — Kaley Cuoco and Anthony Anderson — with a customized Pitbull track, and quickly extended into football: as one of the NFL's first official spirits sponsors, Smirnoff released spots tied to winning plays all season.

Alongside the campaign, Smirnoff formalized the 'Smirnoff for the People Fund' to centralize its diversity and inclusion giving, from The Phluid Project to the Transgender Law Center and Black Girl Ventures.

The point was architecture: a platform, not a one-off ad, that every future Smirnoff campaign could plug into.

Why it worked

  • One inclusive platform replaced a growing pile of disconnected product messages.
  • The NFL partnership gave the platform a mass audience without a hard product sell.
  • The fund turned the slogan into ongoing, credible action rather than a claim.
  • Celebrity casting made inclusivity visible on screen instead of just asserted.

What can be applied

When a portfolio grows faster than the brand story, don't keep adding product ads: consolidate everything under a single transferable platform that every future campaign can inherit.

Aftermath

The platform anchored Smirnoff's marketing through the 2022 Super Bowl, where an extension ensured 'no fans are left behind'. It continues to frame Smirnoff's NFL and diversity campaigns.
