The solution
Australians with disability make up almost 20% of the population yet appear in advertising only about 1% of the time. The standard fix — a heartfelt public-service spot — asks viewers to care about an absence. The Shift 20 Initiative, conceived by Special and the Dylan Alcott Foundation, instead made the absence visible: ten brands including ANZ, AAMI, Bonds, Kia, McDonald's, Oral-B, nib, Pantene, Uber and Weet-Bix swapped key scenes in their own well-known ads to feature people with disability.
The altered spots ran in the lead-up to a Sunday in September 2023 and culminated in a complete media roadblock during prime time's Sunday Project — the 'Unignorable Adbreak.' Re-shoots, led by Revolver, used talent and crew with disability, with inclusive-production consultants such as Bus Stop Films overseeing casting, riders and Auslan translation.
The mechanism is what makes it clever: viewers recognize the original ad, register the single changed element, and infer the argument themselves. The launch anchored a permanent coalition giving brands tools and best-practice resources for accessible, inclusive communications.
What it achieved
Don't make an ad about inclusion; make inclusion in the ads
Why it worked
Editing familiar ads makes viewers notice the swap instantly — the recognition does the persuading.
Ten brands acting together turned a single campaign into a media event no one brand could buy credibly.
A prime-time roadblock concentrated the launch into one 'unignorable' moment rather than a slow burn.
It converted into a standing initiative with resources, so the stunt had an institutional afterlife.
What can be applied
Representation is proven by substitution, not assertion. Swapping disabled talent into roles audiences already know shows they can fill any role — a point no PSA makes as sharply.
Aftermath
The Unignorable Adbreak launched the Shift 20 Initiative as an ongoing brand coalition for disability representation. The work went on to win the Grand Prix for Good at Spikes Asia 2024 and an Impact Wood Pencil at D&AD 2024, and later spawned follow-ups like a braille out-of-home campaign and a TikTok casting channel for talent with disability.
