Lojas Renner put RFID tags on every garment so online and stores share one live inventory
100% RFID tagging, 4.8M daily reads and AI assortment made Renner's omnichannel 31% of revenue.
Lojas Renner
the move
Lojas Renner, Brazil's largest fashion retailer, bet that the future of retail is one live inventory across all channels. Its RFID program — tags on 100% of items, roughly 4.8 million in-store reads per day, stock positions refreshed every 60 seconds — made each garment findable in real time across more than 400 stores in three countries.
On top of that data layer, the company built AI tools: image-based product matching, purchase-propensity models and personalized recommendations from transaction data. The result is an omnichannel machine in which the app, website, WhatsApp and physical stores all draw on the same availability, with customers choosing pickup or delivery.
The strategy paid off: omnichannel customers spent on average three times more than single-channel ones and made up 31% of revenue in 2023, while first-quarter profit nearly tripled to R$139.3 million. The Renner app ranked first among Brazilian fashion apps for downloads and monthly active users in 2023.
why it works
- Live stock lets every channel promise the same truth.
- RFID doubles as theft protection and labor-saving checkout.
- AI recommendation lifts basket size and relevance per customer.
- Omni shoppers are worth 3x, so the economics self-fund the tech.
what transfers
Omnichannel is an inventory problem before a marketing one: when every item is visible in real time, all channels sell from the same truth, and stores fulfill online orders.
what came after
Renner kept investing about R$800 million a year in stores and digital, opening new formats and pushing the omnichannel share higher; its marketing team continued using AI to segment customers, and the RFID-omnichannel stack became the template for other Brazilian fashion groups.
