The solution
On Twitter, the replies to a tweet are one tap away, but the quote tweets — where people hold forth about a tweet rather than answer it — are buried behind manual searches. Nigerian software engineer Dara Oladosu kept wanting to share 'what everyone is saying about this', so in 2018 he built Quoted Replies: mention the bot with a tweet's URL and it replies with a link aggregating every quote, retweet and reply.
The build leaned on quirks of Twitter's own design. The streaming API listens for keywords, so the tweet URL itself became the trigger. Early versions tweeted text plus a link and got shadowbanned; it took Oladosu six months to learn that a link-only reply never tripped the spam filters, because Twitter's link compression makes each one unique. When volume hit the API's daily ceiling, he routed requests through direct messages, which also gave askers anonymity.
The bot grew from 281,000 impressions in July 2019 to 25.9 million in September — up 9,217% — once iOS and Android companion apps by Hamza Fetuga and Hafeez Sagaya landed. When Jack Dorsey visited Lagos that November, Oladosu demoed it and Twitter's product lead offered him a job on the spot.
What it achieved
A bot you summon by tweeting a tweet's own URL: the streaming API listens for the mention, and the bot answers with a link to every quote and reply.
Why it worked
The tweet URL is a universal handle, so 'show me the conversation about this' needed no app, no login, no new UI.
Link-only replies turned Twitter's own spam defenses into a non-issue.
DM-based replies stretched past the API cap while keeping requesters anonymous.
The need was real and recurring — everyone wanted the quote-tweet context and nobody had it.
What can be applied
Platforms productize what their APIs make hackable: a one-person workaround that surfaces hidden context can become the roadmap for a native feature.
Aftermath
In May 2020 Twitter released its own retweets-with-comments view and publicly credited Oladosu for paving the way; he had declined to join the team building it and kept his full-time job at Andela in Lagos, later doing contract work for Twitter on hideunwantedreplies.com.
