Quantum dots made color a size property — and put nano-light into Samsung's TVs

Ekimov (1981), Brus (1983) and Bawendi (1993) showed particle size sets a quantum dot's color; Samsung's 2017 QLED TVs commercialized it.

The solution

Chemists learn that an element's properties come from its electrons — but at nanometer scale, size joins the equation. In 1981 Aleksey Yekimov showed copper-chloride particles in glass changed color with size; in 1983 Louis Brus proved the effect in particles floating in solution.

The breakthrough needed manufacturing: in 1993 Moungi Bawendi's hot-injection synthesis produced nearly identical, defect-free dots, making them usable. The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to the three for the discovery and development of quantum dots.

The commercial payoff was displays. Samsung released its first QLED TVs with a quantum-dot filter in 2017; the dots convert light into pure reds, greens and blues, giving richer color without dimming. Quantum dots also light LED lamps and guide surgeons by glowing in tumor tissue.

Aftermath

Quantum dots spread through TVs, monitors and lamps, and their creators won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Samsung built QLED, Neo QLED and QD-OLED families on the technology, and researchers continue to pursue dots for flexible displays, sensors and quantum communication.
