The Qi standard made wireless charging interoperable, and Apple's adoption made it default

the move

Early wireless charging used competing, incompatible pads, so a phone built for one never charged on the other, and there was no way to trust that a mat would work.

In 2008 the Wireless Power Consortium set out to fix that with a single interoperable standard, and it launched Qi, which uses inductive charging over a pad and certifies devices so any Qi device works on any Qi pad.

Qi stayed a niche for years until 2017, when Apple joined the WPC and built it into the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X. With Apple's install base, Qi went mainstream and the competing AirFuel standard, which held about 10% of the market, began to fade.

The design choice was simple: certify one shared spec rather than chase the fastest proprietary one, so the pad at a cafe, the mat in a car and the furniture with a top all speak the same language.

Qi became the de facto wireless charging standard, embedded in phones, cars, cafes and furniture, while AirFuel faded. The WPC later pushed Qi2 and higher-power 25W and 50W tiers, and thousands of products are now Qi-certified.
