Pringles shaped its chip as a saddle so it would stack and survive shipping

P&G redesigned the potato chip into a uniform saddle so it could be stacked in a resealable tube and shipped nationally.

the move

Ordinary potato chips were irregular, brittle and went stale quickly, and the air-filled bags wasted truck space. P&G's alternative was to skip frying a whole potato slice and instead make a dough, shape it, and cook it so every chip was identical.

Fredric Baur, a P&G food storage technologist, devised the defining piece: a chip pressed into a hyperbolic paraboloid, or saddle shape, whose curvature gives it rigidity in two directions. The same uniformity let the chips nest in a tube.

Baur patented the cylindrical, resealable container in 1970, and the combination of a durable saddle chip plus a resealable tube meant the product could reach the whole country without turning into crumbs, like furniture that ships flat.

what came after

Pringles were initially a flop; Americans needed a decade to accept such an engineered food. P&G kept refining the formula and marketing, and by the 1980s the stackable chip found its audience. Baur died in 2008 and a portion of his ashes was buried in a Pringles can, a nod to the package he patented.
