The pound lock let canals climb hills without wasting the river

A chamber with gates at both ends raises and lowers boats a few feet at a time — China's 983 invention that made canals the freight highways of their age.

the move

A canal that meets a hill has a problem: water flows downhill, so a channel cannot simply climb. Early solutions such as ramps and single gates were wasteful or fragile. Chinese engineer Chhiao Wei-Yo is credited with inventing the pound lock in 983: a chamber between two gates that could be filled or emptied to move a boat from one level to another.

The pound lock made water itself the elevator: sluices let the chamber fill or drain gradually, so a boat rose or fell a few feet at a time while the canal used only a lockful of water. In Europe the design spread from the 14th century, and Leonardo da Vinci's mitre gates — V-shaped pairs pressed shut by water pressure — made locks seal more reliably.

With flights of pound locks, canals could climb mountains in staircases, carrying coal, grain and goods inland. Britain's canal age and the Bridgewater Canal's freight revolution were built on the lock, and pound locks still move boats and ships on canals and rivers worldwide.
