Power over Ethernet put juice on the data cable, and 802.3af made it standard
Cisco shipped PoE in 2000 for IP phones; IEEE 802.3af (2003) standardized power over spare or data pairs, so one cable now powers and connects everything.

The solution
Ethernet carried data but not power, so IP phones and wireless access points needed a separate power outlet and adapter at every location. Cisco answered in 2000 with Inline Power, a proprietary scheme delivering 48V DC over the spare pairs of a Cat 5 cable to its phones.
In 1999 the IEEE and the Ethernet Alliance had already started standardizing the idea. IEEE 802.3af, ratified in 2003, specified that power could be carried by spare pairs or data pairs and added a detection resistor so switches only energize devices that support PoE — protecting ordinary Ethernet gear.
One cable for power and data cut installation cost and time, removed the need for an electrician at every device, and let power come from a central, UPS-backed switch. That value is why PoE spread from phones to cameras, access points, lighting and beyond.
Why it worked
- It reused the cable already installed instead of adding power wiring
- The detection mechanism made it safe for non-PoE devices
- Central UPS-backed power improved reliability over wall adapters
- Each power upgrade (802.3at, 802.3bt) stayed backward compatible
What can be applied
A proprietary advantage becomes an industry standard when the inventor lets the standards body generalize it — interoperability for everyone multiplies the original product's demand.
Aftermath
802.3af (15.4W) was followed by 802.3at in 2009 at 30W and 802.3bt in 2018 at 90W, each backward compatible. PoE has become a staple of offices and smart buildings, powering phones, cameras, LED lighting, kiosks and even USB-C laptops over one cable.
