Pizza Hut rebuilt a fake AI restaurant in real life and won a Bronze Pencil
When an AI-generated ad for a fake 'Pepperoni Hug Spot' went viral, Pizza Hut made the fictional restaurant real for a weekend.

The solution
Pizza Hut's problem was relevance: Gen Z associated the brand with childhood memories, not current culture. While scanning TikTok, Leo Burnett found a trending AI-generated commercial for a fictional 'Pepperoni Hug Spot' that borrowed Pizza Hut's red roof, pan pizza and even its logo font — and drew over 2 million views in two days.
Instead of sending takedown notices, Pizza Hut decided that since AI had stolen from the brand, the brand would steal from AI — by doing the one thing AI cannot: opening the fake restaurant in real life.
Within a week, a real location was transformed into a Pepperoni Hug Spot-themed hub for one weekend, with polls on social letting Gen Z vote on making the fictional pizza real. The special pizzas sold out.
The One Show jury gave the work a Bronze Pencil in Brand Installations in 2024.
Why it worked
- The meme had already generated millions of views, so the brand was tapping pre-existing attention instead of buying it.
- Rebranding itself as the parody was a surprise that made the story newsworthy.
- Putting a real pizza in a real location proved the brand's point against AI-generated fakes.
- Social polls gave the audience ownership of the outcome, deepening engagement.
What can be applied
When a parody owns the conversation, you can win by being the thing being parodied: reverse the imitation and let the meme's audience come to you.
Aftermath
The activation earned 20 million impressions across leading news outlets, a 78% increase in social impressions, and reached 276,000 Gen Z consumers, with the special pizzas selling out. It took a Bronze Pencil at The One Show 2024.
