In 1975 a Pilot ink researcher, inspired by autumn leaves that change color overnight, developed 'Metamo ink' that changes color with temperature. For decades it lived in novelties — bath toys and a 1976 'magic cup' that bloomed flowers when filled — because the ink reacted to the slightest temperature swing and its particles were too coarse for a pen tip. Writing instruments, Pilot's core business, stayed out of reach for 30 years.

The obvious path to an erasable pen was mechanical: rub the pigment away, as existing 'erasable' ballpoints did, leaving debris and a weak rewrite. Pilot instead pushed chemistry. Its lab — nicknamed 'the castle that never sleeps' — synthesized over 1,000 compounds to design a brand-new temperature-regulating agent, widening the stable range so writing stays erased from about −20°C up to 65°C and survives daily life, while grinding the pigment fine enough for a smooth pen tip.

Frixion Ball launched in Europe in 2006 and Japan in 2007. Europe was the deliberate beachhead: schoolchildren there write in fountain pen and ballpoint, not pencil, and previously needed three pens — one to write, one to erase, one to rewrite. A single pen that did all three spread explosively, and the 2010 retractable knock version made it an everyday pen rather than a gimmick.

The series sold 3 billion units across 100-plus countries from 2006 to 2019 and 5 billion by end-2025, spanning markers, colored pencils and stamps. Pilot created a new category — thermo-reversible erasable writing — and won on core pen performance, not just the trick: it writes dark, erases clean and rewrites immediately.

Don't rub ink off — heat it until it turns transparent

Erasing by transparency, not abrasion, produces no debris and allows infinite rewriting on the same spot.

The breakthrough was threshold engineering: widening the reversible temperature band to −20°C–65°C made the chemistry practical for daily use.

Over 1,000 synthesized compounds were needed because no off-the-shelf chemical held the right transition temperatures.

Launching first in Europe matched the product to a market where children write in ink and carried three pens to manage mistakes.

Thirty years of dormant IP became a category-defining product once particle size and temperature control caught up.

A shelved material property is a product waiting for the right threshold: widened temperature range plus fine particles turned a bath-toy gimmick into a new pen category.

Frixion became Pilot's biggest hit: 3 billion units sold worldwide by end-2019 (2006–2019) and 5 billion by end-2025, sold in over 100 countries and expanded into highlighters, sign pens, colored pencils and stamps. The 'erasable pen' went from contradiction to standard stationery item, with repeat buyers driving strong refill sales.
