the move
Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine had to be held near minus 70C to keep its mRNA intact, but almost no pharmacy, clinic or even warehouse had a freezer that cold, so a normal distribution network could not carry it.
The answer was the box, not the network. Pfizer used a suitcase-sized thermal shipper packed with dry ice that kept the vaccine at ultra-cold temperature for up to ten days, and each box tracked its own location and internal temperature as it moved.
Doses travelled on ordinary FedEx and UPS planes and trucks, and clinics removed the product and used it with only standard cold storage, while the thermal shipper was collected, reused and refilled.
