The standard advice to dog owners — leave the radio on when you go out — was an everyday ritual nobody had branded. Human radio, though, is programmed for humans: ads, news and chatter mean nothing to a dog alone at home. Pedigree New Zealand and Colenso BBDO Auckland saw a media channel hiding inside a guilt habit.

Rather than run commercials on existing stations, they launched a station of their own. K9FM broadcast all day, every day, with original content designed for canine ears: calming classical music, stimulating words and sounds to keep home-alone dogs engaged, and segments where owners phoned in to speak directly to their special listener at home.

The trick was the inversion of targeting. The 'audience' was the dog, but the emotional transaction was with the owner, whose daily guilt about leaving was answered by a brand that literally kept their dog company. Every hour of listening was an hour of brand presence no competitor could buy into.

K9FM was named New Zealand's ORCA radio award winner for June 2014, took the Radio Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2014, and became the first radio campaign in 32 years to win a D&AD Black Pencil — the industry's rarest craft honor.

Program the station for the dog, not the owner

It converted an existing daily habit (leaving the radio on) into owned media, instead of renting attention in 30-second slots.

Programming for the dog made the content genuinely useful, so owners chose it over human stations day after day.

The absurdity of a dog radio station was itself the earned-media hook, carrying the story far beyond paid reach.

All-day broadcasting gave Pedigree hours of brand presence where competitors could only afford seconds.

It repositioned Pedigree from food seller to caregiver, aligning with its 'for the love of dogs' platform.

When everyone advertises on a medium, owning the medium can be cheaper and deeper: serve the end user directly and let the buyer come along out of gratitude.

K9FM won the ORCA award for June 2014 in New Zealand, the Radio Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2014, a Silver at Cannes Lions, and D&AD's first Black Pencil for radio in 32 years. It is routinely cited as proof that radio — a medium often dismissed creatively — can carry a brand idea when the brand is willing to become the broadcaster.
