Outride, a US non-profit founded by Specialized that funds cycling-for-brain-health research, had a communication wall: the science connecting cycling to brain activity is real but lives as EEG waveforms and journal speak. A rider who could experience the benefit still had to take the research on trust. Presenting study data as charts asks an audience to interpret, and most decline.

Showing a science lecture, a poster of brain scans, or a figure from the paper would have proven the point to people already convinced and bored everyone else. Outride needed the finding to be felt at the moment it would otherwise be asserted.

what everyone would do

The standard answers all fail to produce feeling: present the research as charts and slides, which only scientific audiences read; publish a case-study video of a rider, which demonstrates but cannot be the reader's own experience; or hand out branded swag, which carries no science at all. Each keeps the audience as a spectator to someone else's result.

MC&V saw a brain signal can be the artwork's medium, not data shown. When the generative form obeys the rider's live EEG, the claim is lived, not presented — the rider now generates the science.

the move

At the Outride Summit, MC&V built 'Brain on Bikes': each participant wore an EEG headset while riding a stationary bike, and their live neural signals drove a generative artwork that continuously reshaped its movement, energy, composition and form according to that person's brain. At the end of the ride each participant received their own personalised digital artwork as a keepsake — a tangible record of what cycling did to their brain that night.

why it works

Making the data the driver of the artwork collapses the distance between a research claim and personal experience. The rider cannot be sceptical of their own brain moving a shape on screen, because they are watching cause and effect happen in real time — the claim is demonstrated a thousand times a minute rather than asserted once. Personalising the output and giving it away converts a transient moment into proof the person carries: the keepsake is not a brochure asserting the benefit, it is an artifact their own nervous system produced, so the finding stays true and owned long after the ride rather than evaporating with the demonstration.

where it breaks

It fails when the data cannot plausibly shape the experience — if audiences can't see their influence, or suspect the mapping is fake, the whole claim collapses back into decoration. It needs a ceremony that lets each person experience the live link individually (here, the ride), which does not scale to passive crowds, and its persuasive power rests on the personalisation being real and believable. It also under-delivers as pure marketing: no measured outcome was reported, so its worth rests on the felt effect rather than hard numbers.

The experience is framed as the first iteration of a platform intended to expand into richer data inputs, events, education and research communication — a template for turning any specialist dataset into a felt, ownable encounter rather than a published figure.
