The solution
Telecom brands usually compete on discounts when families buy a child's first phone. Orange chose a different frame: parents were not against phones, they were against feeling irresponsible for handing one over. Its Safer Phone campaign made responsible use the product benefit.
The offer combined what teenagers wanted with what parents needed: a smartphone positioned around AI filtering, cyberbullying support, screen-time management and content blocking. Orange timed the launch for the holiday gift season, when first-phone decisions become urgent.
The Cannes Lions Korea analysis says Safer Phone sold 10,000 units in two weeks and required an urgent extra run of 2,000 units. Orange's Quentin Delobelle also said the campaign made the Cannes Titanium shortlist, one of only 18 projects worldwide.
What it achieved
Sell the safe first phone parents want to buy
Why it worked
It moved from awareness to commerce: safety was not a message around the phone, it was the phone offer.
The launch used a natural buying moment, Christmas, instead of trying to create a new occasion.
It let parents say yes without surrendering the safety conversation to app settings and lectures.
What can be applied
When a category creates anxiety, do not just reassure people. Rebuild the offer so the reassurance is part of the thing they buy.
Aftermath
The Work lists Orange - Safer Phone as a 2025 Creative Commerce Silver Lion and also as a Brand Strategy shortlist. Orange said it would keep building responsible digital-use work, including education through amateur football clubs and safe zones in gaming environments.
