Ocado's robot hive turned a loss-making grocer into a warehouse-tech seller
Ocado's Andover hive — about 1,000 robots on a 17-high crate grid — became the Smart Platform; Kroger licensed it in May 2018 with a £183m, 5% stake.

the move
Ocado spent years as a UK online-only grocer with thin margins, but its real investment was software and automation: customer fulfilment centres where crates sit in tall stacks and robots swarm over a grid to fetch them.
At full capacity, its Andover CFC processes about 3.5 million items or 65,000 orders a week with around 1,000 robots; a typical 50-item order is picked in minutes because robots bring crates to people instead of people walking aisles.
In May 2018 Ocado announced a partnership with Kroger: exclusive US rights to the Ocado Smart Platform, up to 20 fulfilment centres over three years, and Kroger subscribing for a 5% stake worth £183 million.
The deal pushed Ocado's market value above £6 billion and into the FTSE 100 in June 2018 — larger than Marks & Spencer's, although its sales were a fraction of M&S's.
