The NMFC turned LTL pricing into 18 classes based on what's hard to carry
Since 1936 commodities ship under 18 NMFC classes set by density, stowability, handling and liability — one number both sides can quote against.

The solution
Less-than-truckload freight mixes many shippers' goods on one truck, so the cost of a shipment depends less on what it is worth than on how much space it takes, how it handles and what it risks. Before the NMFC, pricing was negotiated per shipment with no common language.
The National Motor Freight Classification, established in 1936 and published by the NMFTA, groups commodities into 18 classes from 50 to 500 based on four characteristics: density, stowability, handling and liability. Density is the prime signal — a truck's cube is the scarce resource — and the class becomes the input every carrier's rate table uses.
The standard carries minimum packaging requirements, rules for claims and interline settlements, and the Uniform Straight Bill of Lading; major shippers including the U.S. government require NMFTA membership, which makes the NMFC the de facto North American freight classification. Aftermath
The NMFC still runs LTL pricing in North America; the 2025 reimagination adds standardized density scales and new classes for heavier freight while keeping the four-characteristic logic. It is a rare example of an industry-written standard becoming de facto practice through adoption.
