NFC made contactless work by uniting card, tag and phone on one standard

NFC standardizes a 13.56 MHz inductive link and lets a passive tag draw power from the reader, so taps work everywhere.

the move

Contactless cards, transit tickets and access fobs each ran their own scheme, and phones could not reliably talk to any of them.

NFC chose a globally unlicensed 13.56 MHz inductive link and built its protocols on the ISO/IEC 14443 and FeliCa standards that contactless cards already used, which made phones naturally compatible with existing readers and tags.

The clever part is passive operation: a tag or card draws power from the reader's field, so it can be a cheap sticker, and card emulation lets a phone stand in for a card on the infrastructure built for it.

To displace a fragmented set of devices, adopt the air interface they already use, then add one layer so every reader and every wallet speaks the same tap.

what came after

NFC became the tap-to-pay and tap-to-ride standard on phones, cards and wearables, with contactless issuance growing to billions of devices. It also spread to pairing, access control and the emerging Digital Product Passport, extending well beyond payments.
