Alfa, Bravo, Charlie: one spelling alphabet ended radio confusion across every language

ICAO chose 26 code words that sound distinct and exist in English, French and Spanish, so pilots worldwide could spell letters without mistakes.

The solution

Over radio, plain letters are dangerous: M and N, or G and J, blur together under static and accents. ICAO developed the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet — also called the ICAO or NATO phonetic alphabet — so spelled letters are unambiguous.

From 1948–49, linguist Jean-Paul Vinay worked with ICAO's language sector to build the list. The minimum requirements: words had to be short, spelled similarly in English, French and Spanish, and be live words in each language. ICAO adopted the first version on 1 November 1951 and completed the final version on 1 March 1956 after replacing the words for C, M, N, U and X.

The system works because each code word is deliberately distinct from every other, and numbers like 3, 5 and 9 are pronounced "tree", "fife" and "niner" so they cannot be confused. Pilots, air traffic controllers, military and police use it worldwide.

What can be applied

Aftermath

The alphabet took effect in NATO in 1956 and became the established universal phonetic alphabet for military, civilian and amateur radio communications; it is still in use worldwide today.
