the move
In the late 1980s digital audio was far too bulky for the networks and storage of the day, so researchers at Fraunhofer set out to compress it without changing the sound. Their idea was perceptual coding: model what the inner ear actually sends to the brain and keep only that, discarding the rest.
The result became MPEG Audio Layer 3, or MP3. In 1992 the MPEG committee fixed the method in London; in 1994 Fraunhofer released the first software encoder, and the '.mp3' extension followed in 1995.
The format spread on the internet, accelerated when a leaked and 'free' encoder went out and when the open LAME encoder fixed Fraunhofer's code. MP3 became the de facto music format, driving Napster and the whole digital music era; Fraunhofer and Thomson profited by licensing the patents that the format depended on.

- Perceptual coding kept files at a tenth of CD size without audible loss, the single property that made music travelable.
- Because it was a standardized MPEG layer, players and rippers across makers and platforms all agreed on one file type.
- Free and open encoders lowered the cost to zero, so the format spread faster than any company could have marketed it.
- The patents behind MP3 were licensed to the hardware players and software that the format made inevitable, so adoption became revenue.

If your format is the one that makes content small enough to travel, give the tools away so it spreads, then monetize the standard once everyone depends on it.
what came after
MP3 became the de facto music format of the internet, fuelling the Napster file-sharing era and then the legal downloads of MP3 players and the iTunes store. Fraunhofer and Thomson licensed the MP3 patents for years; the last of them expired around 2017, and the streaming-friendly AAC largely succeeded it.
