Motorola converted miners' walkie-talkies into two-way voice calls to the world above.

Phones are banned in India's coal mines; Motorola and Dentsu turned the miners' existing walkie-talkie radio signal into a voice call to an ordinary phone.

the move

Thousands of mine workers in India work deep underground in the dark for over ten hours a day, and mobile phones are forbidden there for safety reasons, leaving them cut off from their families.

Rather than try to install phones or a network in a dangerous mine, Motorola and Dentsu used the one device the miners already had: the walkie-talkie.

A custom module at the surface converts the miners' radio signals into two-way voice calls that reach ordinary 5G phones, so a miner in the dark can speak to a family member above ground.

The design is built on existing infrastructure, making it affordable and scalable, and it turned a simple radio standard into a lifeline.

why it works

  • Safety rules ban phones underground, so a new network was never the answer; the existing radio was.
  • Reusing walkie-talkies kept the cost low and let the system scale without new equipment.
