The design requires the capital and organizational capacity to build and continuously maintain a dense network of stocked stations across the entire route — an operation without the resources to build and staff that infrastructure has no relay to fall back on and remains bound by single-traveler endurance limits. It also depends on secure, reliable control over the territory the relay crosses, since stations, riders and stored resources are all vulnerable to disruption or attack in contested ground — exactly the kind of continuous territorial control the Mongol Empire's conquests provided but a weaker power couldn't replicate. And the model only accelerates transmission of something genuinely divisible into discrete handoff segments; it does nothing for a task requiring continuous, unbroken attention or context that can't simply be handed to a fresh unit partway through.

The yam is credited as the fastest land communication network in the world until the telegraph, later routes and station sites survived into the Russian Empire's own postal system (the word yamshchik, coachman, and place names like Gavrilov-Yam persist today), and it stands as the reference case for relay-based logistics design predating the modern postal relay, pony express, and packet-switched network by centuries.
