MISUMI's meviy uses AI to quote and ship custom parts as fast as catalog parts

Engineers upload 3D data; meviy's AI prices it instantly, generates the manufacturing program and ships in as little as a day, cutting lead times by up to 92%.

MISUMI Group (ミスミグループ本社)

the move

MISUMI built its reputation on 'certain, short delivery' for factory automation parts: more than 30 million catalog items with standard two-day shipping and a 99.7% on-time rate. But custom parts, where every piece is unique, stayed slow because engineers had to convert 3D data into paper drawings and fax requests to machinists.

In 2016 MISUMI launched meviy, a procurement service where designers upload part data to a website. AI instantly returns a price estimate and automatically generates the manufacturing program, enabling shipment of made-to-order parts in as little as one day — a 92% reduction in the roughly 1,000 hours once needed to procure 1,500 custom parts.

The concept was not new to the company: a 1980s system called C3 already let customers send mold-part drawings and receive prices and delivery dates over dial-up connections, priced at 8.95 million yen for the terminal set. The idea spent about 40 years waiting for technology to catch up before meviy made it real, and the service is now spreading through factories in Japan and overseas.

why it works

  • AI removes the human quoting bottleneck that made custom parts slow and costly.
  • Automated manufacturing programs turn one-off orders into near-standard production.
  • The 92% lead-time cut changes procurement behavior, not just prices.
  • A 40-year-old internal idea found its moment once AI matured.
the payoffInstant AI quoting turns bespoke parts into catalog speedinspired

what transfers

If custom work is slow because quoting and programming are manual, automate the front-end decisions: instant price and feasibility turn bespoke orders into a repeatable, high-volume service.

what came after

meviy has become a flagship growth service for MISUMI, spreading through domestic and overseas factories, while the core catalog business kept its two-day, 99.7% delivery discipline. The company continues to push the model toward global leadership in configurable factory-automation parts.
