A dissolving microneedle patch delivered flu vaccine without a needle or cold chain

Injection requires trained staff, a cold chain and sharps disposal, and all three raise the cost and lower the reach of vaccination in places without refrigeration.
A team led by Emory and Georgia Tech tested a dissolvable microneedle patch for influenza vaccine: the spikes are made of vaccine, dissolve in the skin, and deliver a response similar to a conventional injection.
In the 100-person phase 1 trial, the patch was stable for a year at 40C, could be safely self-applied, left no sharps waste, and was preferred over injection by most who tried it.
why it works
- Removing the refrigerated cold chain lets a vaccine sit on a pharmacy shelf or go by post.
- Self-application removes the need for trained staff, so a drive-through or home dosing becomes possible.
- Dissolvable spikes leave no sharps, cutting disposal cost and the risk of needle injury.
- Targeting the skin's immune cells can be as strong as or stronger than a muscle injection.

what came after
The Lancet-published trial opened the door to microneedle-patch vaccination, and companies including Micron Biomedical and Vaxxas moved the patch into later-stage flu and other vaccine programs where heat-stable dosing matters.
