MDLBEAST rebuilt Soundstorm as a four-district city of beats — and won Effie Saudi Gold

Instead of a bigger festival, Soundstorm 2025 was redesigned as a navigable city — four districts, 14 stages — and won Effie Saudi's first Gold.

MDLBEAST

The solution

Soundstorm launched in 2019 and grew into the Middle East's largest music festival, but by 2025 its sprawling stage collection had become the main friction: audiences struggled to navigate and discover new acts. The strategic breakthrough was to rethink the site itself rather than simply book bigger names.

MDLBEAST, with The Bold Group's creative arm, rebuilt the grounds as 'A City of Beats' — four districts named by cardinal point, each with its own musical identity, connected by a central Downtown hub. Fourteen genre-coded stages were designed so that every district felt distinct, and the layout was informed by behavioural heat-mapping and multi-year attendee feedback that had flagged navigation as the top problem.

The scale was staggering: around half a million people attended the 11–13 December edition with 200+ artists across 14 stages. Soundstorm West alone used 1,104 shipping containers to build four stages with a combined capacity of 16,300, the Big Beast mainstage welcomed 65,000 people per night, a 1,600-drone show lit up the sky, and site-wide screens totalled 2,200 square metres.

The redesign won Gold for MDLBEAST at the inaugural Effie Awards Saudi Arabia in 2026. The Shorty Awards case study reports 1.1 billion global impressions and 90.1 million social engagements, and says 72% of MDLBEAST fans now prefer attending events in Saudi Arabia over travelling abroad.

Why it worked

  • Rebuilding the site as a city solved navigation and discovery while creating spectacle — one investment, two outcomes.
  • Heat-mapping and years of feedback turned recurring complaints into structural redesign rather than cosmetic patches.
  • Genre-coded districts encouraged cross-genre discovery and longer dwell time instead of aimless stage-hopping.
  • A city is a nameable idea: 'Soundstorm becomes a city of beats' gave the brand a story it could own and sell.
What it achievedTreat the festival as a city, not a lineupinspired

What can be applied

When a festival outgrows its site, redesign the site as the product: districts with distinct identities turn a crowd into a city people explore, and the city becomes the story.

Aftermath

A City of Beats won Gold at the inaugural Effie Awards Saudi Arabia in 2026, credited to The Bold Group, and the redesign was credited in the Shorty Awards entry with 1.1B global impressions, 90.1M engagements and 11.7K organic posts. MDLBEAST reported that the festival ecosystem now supports 1,400 full-time and 14,000 part-time roles, engaging more than 540 vendors.
