By 2020 the pandemic had gutted Maxis's device business — a key revenue stream. iPhone 11 sales fell 31% month-on-month in January, and the first month of Malaysia's lockdown took device sales down 66%. With the lockdown extended, the upcoming iPhone 12 launch was the quarter's biggest chance, and in Malaysian telecom the rule of launches was simple: the first telco to market a pre-order wins the most pre-orders.

There was one gate: Apple's keynote. No telco may use the new phone's likeness before it, so every pre-order campaign started together. Maxis and Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur turned the gate into the idea. Social listening surfaced the most-speculated features — colours, sizes, distance sensor, low-light mode, real-time video editing — and an in-house team wrote, shot and edited a parody pre-order film for an 'AirPhone 12', a phone made of hype and nothing else, using the office as the set. It launched days before the keynote: the first Maxis phone ad without showing a phone.

The film became the talk of Malaysian social media within hours and drew press as far as the US. Rival telcos pressured Maxis to take it down, and within a day it was off the air — by design. By then it had delivered: 48.4 times more shares than Maxis's average Facebook asset, with pre-orders captured in the window every competitor was still locked out of. The Kancil Awards 2022 gave it Bronze.

Sell the rumours: pre-order the hype, not the phone

The bottleneck was a rule everyone obeyed, so the winning move stayed inside it

An invisible phone made the absence of the product the story instead of a limitation

Social listening supplied the specs, so the parody echoed what buyers already wondered

Planning for takedown within a day meant the risk was priced in, not hoped away

When an embargo blocks your category's biggest moment, don't break the rules — advertise the anticipation. Whoever sells the rumour owns the window before anyone can sell the product.

AirPhone 12 ran for roughly a day before rival pressure took it down, which was the plan: the film needed only the embargo window to win the launch conversation, and its 48.4x share rate against Maxis's average Facebook asset made it the telco's most-shared asset. Coverage reached US trade press, rare for a Malaysian telco campaign. At the Kancil Awards the work took Bronze in 2022, and the play — launch on the rumour cycle, pull on cue — entered the region's launch playbook.
