Lytro's plenoptic camera shot first and focused later—refocusing any photo after capture
A microlens array records light rays, not just pixels, so any shot can be refocused after the shutter closes.

In 2005 Ren Ng and colleagues at Stanford built a hand-held plenoptic camera by placing a microlens array between the main lens and the image sensor. Instead of recording only the total light at each pixel, the array records how much light arrives along each ray, capturing the 4D light field in a single exposure.
After capture, software re-sorts the measured rays to compute sharp photographs focused at different depths. The paper showed that a linear increase in microlens resolution produces a linear increase in refocused-image sharpness, letting the camera extend depth of field without reducing the aperture—shorter exposures and less noise.
Ng founded Lytro to commercialize the research; his 2006 dissertation on digital light field photography won the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. Lytro's consumer camera reached the market in 2012 at $400, followed by the studio-oriented Illum, and rivals copied the idea with multi-shot refocus modes.

When a problem looks unsolvable at capture time, move it to computation: capture richer data now, defer the hard decision until later.
what came after
The consumer camera sold poorly—reviewers called it a one-trick pony—and Lytro pivoted to cinematic and VR light-field capture. In March 2018 the company wound down; some employees and likely dozens of its imaging patents went to Google, while refocus-after-shot became a standard phone-camera feature.
