Lifebuoy turned cold-drink condensation into an antibacterial hand wash
Millions fake handwashing by wiping fingers on a cold drink's condensation, so Lifebuoy made a sticker that turns it into an antibacterial cleanser.

The solution
In India, where eating with hands is customary, many people lack easy access to soap and running water. A common shortcut is wiping one's fingers on the condensation of a cold drink and passing it off as handwashing—a habit that persisted after Covid and resisted hygiene public-service announcements.
Instead of trying to correct the habit or break through message fatigue across a country of 1.4 billion, Lifebuoy and MullenLowe Singapore made the habit the mechanism. They created a low-cost sticker infused with Lifebuoy's antibacterial formulation that activates on contact with condensation, dispensing cleanser that cleans hands without leaving residue.
The Condensation Cleanser launched in March 2024 at Mumbai's Lil Flea festival, where over 50,000 attendees faced inaccessible or queued handwashing facilities. The launch cleaned over 50,000 hands and gave an estimated 100 street-side food stalls and F&B establishments improved access to handwashing at no cost.
The work won a Gold Spikes Asia award in Media in 2025 and a Bronze at the London International Awards, and Lifebuoy was in discussions with major beverage brands, restaurant chains and retailers to distribute the sticker through their own channels.
Why it worked
- It rode a subconscious act that already happens everywhere, so distribution piggybacked on the cold-drink market instead of building new infrastructure.
- The sticker solved the access problem directly: anyone with a cold drink got a handwash, with no queue, no soap and no water needed.
- Reframing a bad habit as raw material made the solution feel intuitive and inevitable rather than like another public-service announcement.
What can be applied
When a habit is too widespread to fight, design the correction into the habit itself. A fix that arrives inside the behaviour needs no behaviour change and almost no distribution.
Aftermath
Beyond the Mumbai launch, the Condensation Cleanser reached street-side food stalls and F&B outlets at no cost. It won Gold at Spikes Asia 2025 in Media and Bronze at the London International Awards, and Lifebuoy was in confidential talks with beverage brands, restaurant chains and retailers to scale distribution through their own channels.
