Kenya's flowers are a vital export, and getting them to the Dutch auction is a race against decay. Air freight is the only realistic option, but air freight is priced per kilogram, so wasted space and a shaky cold chain each cost money directly and shorten the flower's life.
The Holland Flower Alliance — a partnership of Royal FloraHolland, KLM Cargo and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol — set out to define the ideal chain from the Kenyan grower to the Aalsmeer auction, focusing on the cold chain and on standardising how flowers are carried.
The 'Ideal Flowerbox' project created a standardised box and pallet sized to remove the unused space between flower boxes on a shipment. In a two-month trial running from Nairobi in Kenya to Amsterdam, the standard box increased the weight carried on airline pallets of flower shipments by 15%, making the whole process more efficient and sustainable.
The gain came from loading, not speed: by making a pallet of flowers fit together cleanly, fewer boxes of air freight carry the same flowers. Perishable logistics was improved by solving the geometry of the packaging rather than the speed of the plane.

The Ideal Flowerbox trial was judged successful and the Holland Flower Alliance planned to extend it to more flower shipment routes in 2019. Royal FloraHolland, KLM and Schiphol continued a shared effort to improve the Kenya-Netherlands flower chain, and the standard-box idea remains a model for perishable air cargo where a slight gain in load factor directly improves a hard-to-afford fresh chain.
